Its not from flat ironing, unless the curls you are talking about is more like frizz damage from flat ironing. Hair sometimes changes as we get older and hormones can play a part too.

same thing happened to me...only mine was kinda wavyish, I flat ironed it for about a year and a half and badaboom- it's curly as ever. requires less work than straight hair in my opinion. consider yourseslf lucky =D

those curls you are seeing is damage to your ends. applying that much direct heat often enough will do that. you might try giving the straightener a rest.
