How can I get an emo-type hairstyle with curly hair?

My hair is really tough to deal with because it is so curly. It takes about 2 hours or more to straighten and then it gets frizzy anyway. So I was wondering if there is any kind of emo hairstyle I could do with all these curls. Should I cut it shorter so it's easier to deal with? And should I use hairbands? Thanx.
